What have you found to be the most beautiful part of life after loss? I often reflect on how many unanswered questions remain when you lose someone. It’s a tragedy for any and all who know it. But I don't shy away from those unanswerable questions. I obsess over them. And when I obsess over them, it’s almost as if I’ve conjured the spirit of this person I love and miss so terribly; and in making this obsession such a large part of my weekly life, I can dream with his memory. I can imagine and ponder and make a place for him to live on, right within my mind. Like most Black kids, I was always taught you have to work twice as hard to get half of what others have. It's because we have to prepare ourselves for a lifetime of "catching up" to our non-Black peers, and facing systemic oppression in all corners of life. But still, there's so much pride and beauty in being Black, and being a Black woman in particular. We are the most educated demographic group and the fastest growing entrepreneurs in America which says everything about our drive and our ability to hold it down for our families. I just love us. Save your money: Having good money habits and understanding how you view money will help a lot in your adult life. I've spent money on things I wish I hadn't and if I have saved it instead, it would have caused a lot less stress. But I also don't regret my decisions since they have brought me to who I am today and have taught me valuable lessons. Some friends are not forever: Some people will stay and others will go. I wish I understood that and learned that before actually having to go through it. Friend breakups are not fun. Invest in yourself: You won't regret investing in yourself. I think I am a romantic at heart, and honestly I am probably in love with many people. I love my friends in a way that I cannot describe, like how I love my family in ways that I cannot describe either. It’s something that’s always been there, always been a topic of discussion (never to me), but looming always and forever. When I was in college, I got a decent job for the time as a law librarian. I was running up and down the bay area (mostly San Francisco and Oakland), I was never directly pointed out as a black woman but I’d receive looks on my hair occasionally from people who’d probably never speak to me outside of the workplace, I’d receive compliments on how nice and clean I dressed, or AMAZING comments when I straightened my hair. Curious microaggressions that I didn’t think about as much as I should have at the time. Moving abroad (I’ve been abroad since 2017), has come with so much. Of course I’m very conscious of being a black woman in China. I was conscious in Italy, Hungary and every other country I got the chance to visit. It’s something the world will forever make me conscious of. Working in China has come with interesting tag ons. Being a black woman from America, specifically from California, with a very clear accent has given me some privileges here. At the same I’ve watched white men with the same or lesser experience get paid double what I make just because they’re white. In China it's all about perception and how appealing you can be to sell to Chinese parents.
