Tell us about your business, Noted.

Noted is a women's clothing brand. We style women with classy, chic and casual pieces. Currently we are online only, but are working towards our first brick and mortar store.

How did you get your idea/concept for Noted?

I was working on a body care line then I got pregnant and sick with constant morning sickness, I couldn't bring myself to look at the smelly goods. I was so determined to start a business though so I went with my two loves fashion and flowers and ultimately stuck with fashion.

How did you come up with the name for your venture?

For the body care line I wanted a name that reflected the name "scent" and the word "note" came to me. I immediately knew that was the RIGHT name "noted", because I said it all the time, it was easy to remember and chic, it was a perfect fit for a brand I wanted to grow.

What was Noted’s mission at the outset? Has it changed over time at all? If so, why?

My number one goal was to have a brick and mortar store because I love the in person shopping experience and I wanted to create that for women. I never wanted Noted to be known as an online store, and ironically that's exactly what I'm focused on expanding now. The goal is still to be a brick and mortar brand as well as an online brand.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

When I left my full-time job to focus on my business.

To what do you attribute the success of your business?

God's grace and my business coach.

What are some business challenges that you have experienced and how have you overcome them?

I personally have always struggled with "selling", over the years I associated being “salesy” to being icky, therefore I would always sell myself short and feel as though I wasn't worthy of people's hard earned money. I've learned and am still learning that sales is what keeps a business living. I've had to work on my mindset a lot as a business owner.

What is unique about your business?

We provide style inspiration with every piece. We also strive to have exceptional customer service.

What’s your company’s goals?

To be a nationally known brand and to have stores across the US.

What motivates you?

The thought of growing a business that can provide a great life for my family and be something that gets carried on to the next generation.

How do you generate new ideas?

Conversations with God, my coach and the Noted team.

If you had a chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?

I would be more realistic and a little less optimistic and I would manage my money better.

What would you say are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

1. Perseverance

2. Bravery

3. Creativity

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My grandmother (“Big Mama”). She was a very successful entrepreneur. She was born in 1920 and despite all of the odds against her (losing her son, daughter and husband while young, being in a predominantly white small town and being a mother) she persevered and became a very successful beautician with her own salon, she was able to provide more love and money than her family could ever ask for. She was so strong.

How do you juggle your business/work with the responsibilities of motherhood?

I wake up 3 hours before my family wakes up and I do my best to be present and give attention to whatever needs my attention at the moment.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

KEEP GOING.

Where do you see your business in 5 years vs. 10 years?

In 5 years, I’d like to have a well known store in the Louisville area. 10 years from now, I want Noted to be a well known brand with multiple locations between the mid-west and south.

Is there anything else you want to say on this topic?

When starting a business you have to lay aside your pride, negative thoughts and opinion of others. Do what's best for YOU and enjoy the bumpy ride.
